Course Modules: What you will learn and how you will practice the new skills

Skills & Techniques in Reading & Lectures

1. Define Scope – Learn to ask the right questions of the boss, administrators and care-givers to understand what they want the project to do. Next, learn how to use a strong scope (goal) statement that will avoid uncontrolled changes to the project. Then learn to uncover the major limits on cost and schedule.

2. Gather Requirements – Learn how to ask the department heads the right questions to document what they need from the project.  Next, link their requirements to the project goals they support. Uncover all the requirements so you can address them early in the project.

3. Build Project Plan – Learn to design a plan covering deliverables, resources and project risks. Also make initial estimates of time and cost. Next, identify risks and plan how to avoid them. Build a Power Point slide show of your project plan and then present it to the boss, administrators and care-givers.

4. Then, create a Work Breakdown & Schedule – Learn how to sequence and estimate your tasks using project management software. Then learn how to build a project work breakdown structure (WBS). It details all the deliverables your team will produce. Next, break down your high-level deliverables into assignments for your team members. Finally, create clear performance expectations for each assignment.

5. Tradeoffs & Critical Path – Learn to develop alternative ways of doing the project by changing the scope, duration, costs and resources. Develop trade-offs between them for the department heads to consider. Then optimize your schedule to cut the project’s cost and duration.

6. Conflict Management – Understand five strategies for resolving conflicts and when to apply them. Learn how to use these techniques to lower the impact of conflicts on your project schedule and budget.

7. Tracking & Status – Learn to give the boss, administrators and care-givers accurate forecasts of the project completion date and final cost. Then update your project schedule to show actual results to-date and identify problems. Finally, use the software to model solutions and forecast the final dates and costs.

Practice in Live Meetings & Presentations

1. Lead a live project planning session with your instructor who plays the roles of the boss, administrators and care-givers. Ask them questions to define a clear scope (goal) for the project that will solve their problems. Then gain their approval of the scope.

2. Next, run a live requirements meeting with each department head (role-played by your instructor). Gather their requirements and define the deliverables each department must produce using those requirements. Finally, learn how to use this information to manage requests for changes.

3. Then present your plan & slides to the department heads (role-played by your instructor). Outline your approach to the project and give them information on the requirements. Answer their questions about your plan and gain their approval and support.

4. Next, review your schedule with your instructor when you complete the WBS, task sequences and estimates of work and time. Discuss your schedule’s strengths and weaknesses in live meetings with your instructor. Make improvements after each review.

5. Then in a live presentation to the department heads (role-played by your instructor), discuss trade-offs between scope, resources, duration and cost to give them options for the project. Handle any objections they may have.

6. Next, watch a video of a conflict between two team members. Decide the correct technique to manage the conflict and discuss it with your instructor.

7. Last, using status data from your team, update your schedule, spot problems and develop solutions. Present the status report to the boss, administrators and care-givers (role-played by your instructor) using Power Point slides. Answer their questions.
