As you can guess from the name, this is the collection of project management processes that get the project launched. We start with a statement of work from the sponsor, transform that into a business case and then go about identifying the stakeholders who are people that will be positively or negatively affected by the project. We want to identify all of these people up front, if possible. This helps us avoid bad surprises later when a new stakeholder with new requirements emerges. With the stakeholders identified, we work with them on the charter components including the high-level scope and high-level risks. All of that information is packaged into the project charter, which is presented for organizational approval to proceed with the detailed planning.
